A Journey of Unity and Hope
The 2024 Nelson Mandela Legacy Ride4Hope is more than just a cycling event; it is a movement of unity and giving back. This year’s ride covers over 500 km, starting at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick and ending in Mthatha. Celebrating its 5th anniversary, the event features a new route and impactful community engagements. As Eagle Liner, we are proud to support this initiative alongside Intercity Xpress to help spread hope across South Africa.
Day-by-Day Recap
Day 1: Howick to Underberg (144 km, Elevation: 2528 m)
The ride started on September 4th at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in Howick. Riders faced challenging terrains as they cycled to Underberg, surrounded by South Africa’s beautiful landscapes. A meaningful visit to Jabula Primary School reminded everyone of the event’s goal—creating a legacy of hope and unity.
Day 2: Underberg to Kokstad (128 km, Elevation: 1475 m)
On Day 2, riders journeyed from Underberg to Kokstad, tackling steep climbs and taking in stunning views. A stop at Nomzamo Primary School in Kokstad highlighted the spirit of giving back, with a special event that touched the local community.
Day 3: Lusikisiki/Port St. John’s to Mthatha (92 km – 128 km)
On ABSA Day, riders started from Lusikisiki and Port St. John’s, heading to Mthatha and facing elevations as high as 2732m. This day was about endurance and celebration, bringing the riders closer to their final destination and embodying community support and resilience.
Day 4: Mthatha – Qunu – Mthatha (50 km)
MTN Day was a special experience, taking riders through Qunu, Nelson Mandela’s hometown. They visited Qunu Junior Secondary School and the Nelson Mandela Museum, reflecting on Madiba’s vision for a better world.
Day 5: Conclusion in Mthatha
The final day in Mthatha celebrated every achievement, big and small. After completing the challenging journey, riders left with experiences that will inspire them and others. Their ride will have a lasting impact on the communities they visited.
